We first need to clarify that majority of Vietnamese houses are not like that. These tall and very slim houses (we call them “nhà ống”, which is translated word-by-word as “pipe house”) are seen often in places where the price of land is high. So, as any other places all over the world when people have only a small piece of land to build, we build tall building.

The price is even higher if the land is facing a busy street because you can host a business there. So people end up with a small street-facing land and a long “tail” to make up the size. Building a tall building on top of that skewed rectangular land give you “nhà ống”. My architecture friends does not really like these anyway.
