It has been a few years since I used FreeMarker. I now use more popular template languages like Liquid, jinja2, Pug (jade) etc. I've also done a fair amount in XSL. Mostly I prefer the limitations of the newer, lighter languages. They are taking a stance on what should and should not be done at that level of the application, and I think overall that's a good thing. That said, sometimes you need to get something done and you—for a whole host of reasons—need to do it at the template render level. The newer languages make some seemingly trivial tasks exceptionally verbose (Except Pug, I like Pug though it's very odd and ugly).
