The über-hub was working and I was free as a bird, so after sleeping in I threw on jeans, a tee-shirt (complete with a bra!), sneakers, and a ball cap and hied myself to the Disney I like my castle haunted Halloween shirt moreover I love this Denny’s a couple of blocks away. No makeup at all, unwashed hair, my clothes almost certainly covered in cat hair…I was not a pretty sight. When dining alone I like to sit at the counter or bar so I’m not taking up a table where more people could be sitting. On this fine day, I sat at the counter facing the prep/expediting area, where plates were coming out of the kitchen and being given finishing touches and picked up by the servers.

While New York has flattened the Joe and Jill and Kamala and Doug shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this curve, it seems the East Coast isn’t immune to the coronavirus culture wars that are gripping the country itself: one where some of the population plays by the pandemic rules, while the other half is, well…sick of the fear of getting sick. One that prizes the collective good, while the other prizes individual freedom. And the gray area that grips so many in-between—those who are desperately seeking normalcy in this new, unfamiliar age.
