I had the same situation for a Remind me to take attendance shirt, and it feels exactly like you described: stressful and unwelcoming. I am so sorry you went through that. There are lessons everywhere, on how to interview others for a job, how to be a decent landlord, how best to treat a customer, how to BE a customer. And so forth.
